Do you know what’s in your antiperspirant? I recently asked myself this after finding some DIY deodorant recipes to save money. What I found out about commercial antiperspirants is appalling, to say the least. The scary thing is that a lot of people don’t know the difference between antiperspirants and deodorants, and just find the one that smells the nicest. The difference between deodorants and antiperspirants is that one keeps you from sweating (antiperspirant), and one does NOT keep you from sweating, it just eliminates odor (deodorant).

One of the main ingredients in most antiperspirants is aluminum, which is a particularly nasty thing. Aluminum has been connected as the cause to such illnesses as Alzheimer’s Disease and brest cancer. BREAST CANCER. Most tumors in the breast are formed on the upper outside region of the breast… right next to the armpit. This is because in order for the antiperspirant to work, the aluminum has to clog the pores, thus blocking the sweat from emerging. Gross, huh?

Not only does it cause major illness, but it also prevents the body from effectively cooling itself naturally. Sweating is the body’s way of cooling off, and it’s also another way the body gets rid of certain toxins. So, the next time you’re out of antiperspirant, I highly suggest you to just make your own deodorant. This way you will save money, help save the earth, and you will be doing yourself a favor by not clogging your poor armpits with that nasty aluminum. I still have some commercial deodorant left, but as soon as I’m done with those I am going to clean out the containers and make my own deodorant. By doing this, you will know exactly what you are putting on your body too! I will post some recipes that I found, as well as where I found them. Once I make my own deodorant, I will also post which recipe I used!

Recipe #1 from



baking soda

coconut oil

essential oils (optional)

vitamin e (optional)

an empty container


1. Combine 1/4 cup (60 mL) of cornstarch w/ 1/4 cup baking soda.

2. Add essential oils if you wish

3. Add 2 TBS of coconut oil and a few drops of vitamin e oil (if you want that). FYI, coconut oil with a higher melting point is recommended. You can find that kind in the baking section of your local grocery store.

4. Mix the ingredients until they look like silky. Add more of the coconut oil or dry ingredients to adjust. You’re now ready to start packing it into your container. 🙂

The website also says that if you want to know when you’re about out of deodorant to put about an inch of deodorant in the container, then put some tissue that you use for gift bags in there (I think I will use polka dot just for laughs!), then continue filling your container with deodorant!

Recipe #2 from

This is a powder deodorant.


baking soda



1. In a reusable (and resealable) container, combine one part baking soda with six parts cornstarch

2. Close the container and shake well for about a minute to mix the powders.

3. Apply the powder with something like a powder puff, or even a cotton ball would probably work if you don’t have a powder puff.

Since pretty powder jars are a little hard to come by these days, I will probably use a BPA-free plastic container. 🙂

I will probably make the powder one first since I am broke as a joke and it only requires two ingredients. lol

REMEMBER: These are deodorants, not antiperspirants! You will sweat while wearing these, but at least you won’t have the stank-nasty that comes with it. 😉
